Benefits of Aerating

Updated: Sep 11, 2021

What is aeration?

Aeration is the process of perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients. This helps the grass roots grow more deeply. If you've ever seen a neighbors yard with a million holes in it and soil plugs all over the lawn that's what your lawn will look like after an aeration. The image below is what your lawn will look like right after an aeration. But don't worry! It will only like that for about 2-3 weeks as the soil breaks back down into the ground.

Why should I get my lawn aerated ?

The main benefit of lawn aeration is to alleviate soil compaction. The more use your lawn gets the more the soil will be compacted. If you've every walked on a lawn and it felt rock solid that is because the soil is very compacted. This is in turn prevents proper circulation of air, water, and nutrients within the soil.

When is the best time to get my lawn aerated ?

The best time to get your lawn aerated is when the weather is cooler. This is when the grass will recover the fastest. This would be in the spring and early fall. Aerating is normally done twice per season. Aerating is best done with a power raking and a seeding. The combination of power raking, aerating and seeding/over-seeding will rejuvenate your lawn.
